How To Get And Stay Motivated When You Struggle With Depression & Overwhelm

It's a few weeks after the first of the year and you are still struggling to get your new habits to cement into routine.

Trust me, I've been there, it feels like you're dragging yourself to do these things, and on top of that. there is no enjoyment.

I used to think this way. I had to take a good hard look at the reasons behind my need to change things and what I was actually doing before I realized I was going about it all wrong.

First you need to realize there is a whole society of consumerism that is conspiring to make you feel like you need buy the latest gadgets, the best new exercise programs and join the coolest new fad.

Once you recognize the above statement you can implement ways to resist impulse decisions.

Begin to pay attention to the feed of marketing that is being fed to you through your devices.

Subconsciously, these ideas can be planted, it's a dirty way to market but by allowing the advertisemening companies to access our information, we are teaching them what to sell to us.

Secondly, nobody experiences what you're feeling like you do. This is true, and realize no one will know how to shift these feelings but you. So you are in control of the ship. There are situations when a person needs a little help (like this blog, advice from a friend or professional help ) but most of the time the root of it is a matter of personal perspective.

How do you allow the circumstances, past traumas and situations effect your life?


What do you want to do and do you have the power to do about it ?

It's pretty simple, I just think we want the changes to happen quickly and all at once. That's not how it works.

Now is also a time for me to say if your feeling like everyday you're living in survival mode and even the smallest tasks are difficult, you may need to speak to a professional. Sometimes it takes leveling out to even have the capability to start. So don't beat yourself up if you feel like you need to take this step first.

Motivation Awareness

It's time to become aware of the things that really drive you. Think back to times when you felt like you where really in a good flow with your life. Spend some time answering the following questions:

What gets you excited?

What makes you want to move?

What inspires you to create?

What activities are you performing when you feel like time flies?


Are you doing any of these things now ?

Why or why not?

Do you feel swayed by your external world to do things a certain way ?

Or locked into a cyclical routine because of financial reasons?

Obligated to responsibilities?

Elaborate on what's blocking you.

Next... don't move forward until you feel satisfied with your journaling on the above segment.

Exploration and Research

This is the fun part! Allow yourself the time to figure out what feels good while you're doing it.

If your diet is unhealthy, find out what kind of nutrition works best for your body.

Try food journaling or meal planning

Maybe you're not a go-to-the-gym kinda person, maybe you'd rather stay at home and take an online dance class.

Don't be afraid to try new things. Cultivate curiosity.

Make a bucket list and start checking things off.

If finances are an issue, the world is literally at your fingertips! There is free information and classes available online.

Just be mindful of the source information. You want a person or organization to be experienced and knowledgeable in their area of expertise.

Be Open To Solitude

Seek out a plan to find clarity though decompression and silence.

To be truthful, this is where the true magic happens. This what seems to be the hardest thing for people to do.

To do nothing feels counterproductive.

It's just because we have trained ourselves to be busy and productive.

Now If you to the point where you have been sitting too long, it's time to get your butt up and move!

You heard me. Do something, anything right now, there is no reason to wait.
